This intent of this document is to serve as an addendum to the book: A Genealogy of James and Deborah Reynolds of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and Descendants. Vol. I, Part II. Compiled by Stephen C. Roth. First Edition copyright 1999. Printed by Higginson Books through the Reynolds Family Association of America. This document starts with William and Almaria (Brockaway) Reynolds, as already documented in the book identified above, and details what are believed to be their children. Stephen Roth didn’t identify the children for William and Almaria; this document identifies their children and descendants, adding to the total list of descendants of James and Deborah Reynolds identified by Stephen Roth. Listings of the additional descendants, starting with the addition of the children of “William and Almaria”, are using the existing entry for “William and Almaria” as the starting point. The format and reference numbering scheme used to identify individuals is being maintained and added to (see below for details). Evidence has been found though, that identifies Orin and Levinna as their children. Milton is being identified as their son as a result of several pieces of circumstantial evidence (most, if not all, of which listed below was discovered and documented by Harold Henderson) and DNA analyses/comparisons. Among the circumstantial evidence is the following:
Taking into consideration the numerous DNA relationships that are seen to people that can point to ancestors having ties to the Rhode Island Reynolds line (surnames Reynolds, Babcock, Davis, Spencer, Brockway, Gardner), it leads to the conclusion that my DNA is also connected to that line… somewhere. There are just too many Rhode Island Reynolds family relationships being seen to ignore. More of these types of relationships are being seen at Ancestry.com as the results of additional DNA testing are posted. Early in 2017, Ancestry.com rolled out a new feature for the people who have purchased and taken their Autosomal DNA test; it’s called “Genetic Communities”. According to the Ancestry.com literature: “A Genetic Community is a group of AncestryDNA members who are connected through DNA most likely because they descend from a population of common ancestors, even if they no longer live in the area where those ancestors once lived.” Their analysis of my DNA shows 2 possible Genetic Communities for me:
The “Settlers of Colonial New England” Genetic Community would include surnames seen in the Rhode Island Genealogy book: the “Reynolds”, “Davis”, “Spencer”, “Brockway”, “Gardner”, and “Babcock” families. It’s documented that they settled in the Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut and other New England colonies exactly as described. My connection to that Genetic Community is identified as: “Very Likely”. The “Settlers of New York City & Long Island” Genetic Community would include some of the surnames seen on my Mother’s side of the family tree: the “Crusan/Kroesen”, “Vandergrift”, “Van Huysen”, and “Staats”. It’s documented that they settled in the New York and Long Island area. My connection to that Genetic Community is identified as: “Possible” Since my DNA appears to show that I’m related to the Rhode Island Reynolds family…somewhere, this means Milton Reynolds would be too, since I am a direct descendant of Milton. This helps tie Milton to William and Almira Reynolds since they are already documented as belonging to that line. The bold lettering denotes that the child is assigned his or her own entry under his or her reference number later in the manuscript. Additional details can be found in the entry of Stephen Roth’s RI genealogy book. During the War of 1812, William served in Captain Abraham Shepherd’s Company of the Ohio Militia as a drummer boy; his father, William, Sr., was a Sergeant in the same unit. William and Almaria moved around a lot and, as a result, left few records that fully documented their entire family. As children they moved with their parents in 1802 from Rensselaer, New York, to Jackson Township, Adams (now Brown) County, Ohio. As adults they were married there on 16 Nov 1824 by Robert Moore, JP; with Justice Brockway as witness (this helps tie Almaria to Justice and Thankful (Boss) Brockway of Brown County, Ohio). William and Almaria were enumerated in the 1830 US Census for Russellville, Brown County, Ohio; in that census William is reported to have had a spouse and a son under 5 years of age (believed to be Milton) in his household. On 23 August 1830, William’s father, William Sr., gave him 80 acres of land in Ripley County, Indiana: the north half of the northwest quarter of Section 22, Township 6, Range 11. A year earlier William Sr. had given the south half to another son, Henry. These gifts tie the Reynolds brothers to one another, to their father, and tie Brown County, Ohio, and Ripley County, Indiana together. (HH) William the younger sold his acreage the same day for $150 and a few years later it found its way into the hands of Sarah Wise, mother of Nancy Wise, later the bride of Milton Reynolds. This land lies near the west edge of Brown Township, Ripley County, just 2-3 miles north of the Jefferson County line.) This helps document the fact that Reynolds and Wise families knew each other. (HH) Sometime in late 1834 or early 1835, William and Almira moved to Putnam County, Illinois as they can be seen in the 1835 Illinois State Census. In 1834, late in their lives, William’s parents joined them in Putnam County, Illinois (HH) (Capt. Abraham Shepherd also moved to Putnam County, Illinois in 1834. Coincidence?) William and Almaria are recorded as executing several land transactions in 1839 and 1840; the last one recorded on 28 Jan 1840. Then sometime later in 1840 they moved to Otter Creek Township, Ripley, Indiana and are enumerated in the US Census there with a son, age under 5, another son age under 15, and a daughter age under 10 in their household. Sometime between when they were enumerated in the 1840 Census and 1850, they moved once again; this time just 1 county over in Indiana – Jefferson. In the 1850 US Census for North Madison, Jefferson, Indiana they can be seen with just one son, age 7, named “Orrin”; William is identified as a Blacksmith. A “Harrison Brockway” is also enumerated in their household which helps further identify Almaria as a “Brockway” (HH). In the 1860 US Census for Benton, Knox, Missouri they can be seen along with son Orin, who is now 17. In the Pension Benefit application that Almaria filled out for Orin’s service to the Country during the Civil War, it states that William and Almaria moved to Warsaw, Hancock, Illinois in the spring of 1862. William is reported to have died on 07 Sep, 1863 in Warsaw, Illinois and is buried in the Oakland Cemetery, Warsaw, Hancock County, Illinois. In the last few years of his life he was reported to have been “feeble-minded” and not able to provide for himself or his family (possibly having what might be called “Alzheimer’s” today). His son Orin is said to have been the sole provider for William and Almira from the age of 12. Almira is reported to have died in Lebanon, Boone County, Indiana, abt 1889 – 1890, and is reported to be buried in the Brockway family Cemetery, Max, Boone, Indiana. =====================================1-3A-1-5-12-4-2-1 (from entry 1-3A-1-5-12-4-2)Milton Reynolds; born abt: 1828; Brown County, Ohio; died before 1856; Unknown location married: 20 Apr 1848; Ripley County, IndianaNancy Ann Wise; daughter of George and Sarah (McLaughlin) Wise; born: abt 1832; Hamilton County, Ohio; died: After 1910; Garfield County, Oklahoma; buried: Bethany Cemetery, Enid, Garfield, OklahomaChildren: 1-1 Charles Lincoln ReynoldsThe following is an excerpt from one of the reports about Milton Reynolds authored by Harold Henderson: Milton Reynolds, said to be age 22 in 1850, lived in North Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana, with his wife Nancy Ann Wise. When they married on 20 April 1848 in neighboring Ripley County, the newspaper marriage note identified him as of North Madison – hence, he was not a total newcomer and may well have had relatives in town, as few marriages were even mentioned in the newspaper at the time. In 1850 Milton was said to have been born in Illinois; son Charles's two later census reports give his father's birthplace as Ohio and Vermont, and Charles's death certificate gives Ohio. (HH) Brown County, Ohio is being listed as his birthplace in this document since that location matches where his suspected parents were seen living at that time; William and Almaria were married in Brown County, Ohio in 1824 and they were enumerated in the 1830 US Census for Russellville, Brown, Ohio. It’s reasonable to conclude they were probably living in Brown County in between those 2 dates. Milton and Nancy are enumerated in the 1850 US Census for North Madison, Jefferson, Indiana. Milton’s trade is listed as a Blacksmith as is William’s. Milton is listed as age 22 and Nancy as age 17. Milton and Nancy are neighbors of “William and Almira Rannels” (his suspected parents) and “Edward and Levinna Holmes” (his suspected sister and brother in-law). Charles Lincoln Reynolds, Milton’s and Nancy’s only son, can be seen accompanying Nancy in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois in 1855; but there’s no sign of Milton at this time though. Milton seems to have disappeared sometime between 1851 and 1855 with no divorce or death record ever being found. Nancy marries 2nd, Joseph Brooks, on 30 Sep 1856 and has several additional children. (HH) Milton’s death or absence could easily have been due to any number of different causes in the 1850’s; farming accidents are one possibility, Indian wars are one, and diseases are another. In the nineteenth century some of the diseases seen in Indiana and other states included: tuberculosis, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, pneumonia, and scarlet fever. Diseases were not well understood and treatment for those who were infected with them was in its infancy, often times with the treatment doing more actual harm than the disease being treated. Bleeding, purging, vomiting, and blistering were standard treatments for many illnesses. And mercury was even used in some compounds that were administered to the sick. The birth year that is seen on Charles’s headstone in the Meadowview Cemetery, “1849”, is believed to be in error. If 1849 was correct, he should have been enumerated in the 1850 US Census for North Madison, Jefferson, Indiana, along with his parents Milton and Nancy, but he wasn’t. One family record, a letter from Edward Evan Reynolds, Sr. to Edward Evan Reynolds, Jr. that was shared with my Mother by Wendy Sue (Reynolds) MacLaughlin, claims that the birth year for Charles was actually 1852. Several US Census records indicate that 1850 was the birth year. Both years are being listed here as it’s not known conclusively what the correct year was. This same letter identifies October 22 as the birth month and day. If Charles was born in October 1850 though, he still wouldn’t have been recorded in the 1850 Census for North Madison because the enumeration date was 19 Aug 1850; two months earlier than when he would have been born. No birth record has ever been found nor any mention of his birth in any newspaper. Family information identifies Terre Haute, Indiana as the place of birth. If Terre Haute was his birthplace, it’s interesting to consider that Milton and Nancy were reported to be living in North Madison, Jefferson, Indiana but Charles was given birth to in Terre Haute, over 160+ miles away, with no known relatives being nearby (Nancy’s family lived in the next county over from Jefferson County - Ripley). Keep in mind that 160 miles was a long way to travel in the 1850’s. Why they might have travelled to Terre Haute for Nancy to give birth to Charles is unknown. A young boy, assumed to be Charles, can be seen accompanying his mother, Nancy Reynolds, in the 1855 Illinois State Census for Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois dated 3 Jul 1855. He is identified as being under 10 years of age. No sign of his father Milton.(HH) Family history identifies Charles as a farmer and a carpenter. He’s reported to have run away from home in St. Louis, Missouri, at age 14, to join a cattle drive to Montana. Charles’s spouse, Amelia, was described as a “small but real pioneer type”. She usually wore an old pioneer type sun bonnet, full length skirt, and working type apron. When Charles died, she took over such chores as helping to plow and keeping her children in good discipline, and doing all the heavy chores around the ranch. According to Reynolds family history, it’s said that Charles was kicked to death by a horse at his ranch in Manhattan, Montana. Charles is buried in the Meadowview Cemetery in Manhattan, Montana. The cause of death listed on Charles’ death certificate was Chronic Parenchymatous Nephritis, which is usually assigned to a variety of different kidney diseases. =====================================1-3A-1-5-12-4-2-1-1-3 (from entry 1-3A-1-5-12-4-2-1-1)Edward Milton Reynolds; born: 19 Aug 1874, Paris, Edgar County, Illinois; died: 21 Sep 1932, Missoula, Missoula County,Montana married: abt 1902, Gallatin County, Montana Martha Winnifred Davis; daughter of George Evan and Katherine Amelia (Griffith) Davis; born: 31 Mar 1886, Spring Hill, Montana; died: 15 Feb 1948, Los Angeles, CaliforniaChildren: 3-1 Catherine Amelia Reynolds 3-2 Edward Evan ReynoldsEdward Milton Reynolds served in the Spanish American War, Company “C”, of the 1st Regiment Montana Volunteers (Infantry). He enlisted on May 1st, 1898 for a 2-year service. Edward enlisted with the Montana Volunteers, as many patriotic Americans did in their respective states, at the beginning of the Spanish American War. His enlistment papers identified his age as 23, his height as 5’8 ¾” tall, his complexion as “fair, his eyes grey, and his hair brown. Edward was in the first battle of the Filipino War: a skirmish on Feb 5 & the big encounter at Caloocan on the 10th, 1899. Before he could arrive in the Philippines though, the War with Spain was over. The hostilities with the Filipinos all started when the US decided to keep the Philippines after the Treaty of Paris in December,1898. The Filipinos expected to be an independent country and were very angry. Then, the night of Feb. 4, 1899, an American soldier (a Nebraska Volunteer) shot and killed a Filipino soldier. Shots were returned and that was enough for CO General Otis, to go all out. Because Americans were shot at, Otis rejected the Filipino leader's request for a truce. The Filipinos didn't really want to engage the Americans on the battlefield. They wanted a diplomatic solution. They argued that the initial incident had been the result of a misunderstanding. But, the war had begun. Edward fought in battles until June, 1899 before being sent home when it was decided the regular (professional) U.S. Army should take over. He was not a part of the worst atrocities of the war which were committed after 1900 by the U.S. Army as the gorilla war dragged on and on. When Edward was discharged on 17 Oct 1999, he had attained the rank of Sergeant. Between 1900 and 1905 he was a schoolteacher, day laborer, and Deputy Sheriff of Gallatin County, Montana. In 1906 he was elected Sheriff of Gallatin County, Montana and held that position through 1909. Edward was Sheriff and witness to one of the last public hangings that occurred in Bozeman, Montana. People were invited to come, bring their children, have a picnic, attend the ceremony and watch the hangings. In 1912 Edward was hired as a “Special Agent” at the Missoula, Montana station for the Northern Pacific Railway, earning $100 a month as pay. Charles Lincoln named his 3rd son Edward Milton Reynolds. Given Milton’s absence around 1855, Charles probably had little, if any, firsthand knowledge of him, so his bestowing that middle name on his son suggests that Charles’s mother Nancy (who raised him) remembered Milton reasonably fondly. Marc created 2 stories about his father; “Edward Evan Reynolds - The Artist” and “Edward Evan Reynolds - The Man”; what follows is taken from “Edward Evan Reynolds - The Man”. Edward Evan Reynolds (who was called “Evan” to avoid confusion with his father’s name) was born at 8:15 PM on April 19th, 1905 in the city of Bozeman, Gallatin County, Montana to Sheriff Edward Milton Reynolds and his wife Martha Winnifred Davis Reynolds of 545 West Lamme Street, Bozeman, Montana. In 1912, Edward Milton Reynolds became a Special Agent for the Northern Pacific railroad and the family subsequently moved to Missoula, Montana, where Evan attended the local public schools. At the age of 8, he witnessed the last public hanging in Montana, complete with families picnicking and celebrating that event. He became a member of Troop 4, Boy Scouts of America. Evan’s childhood in Missoula, in the Bitteroot Valley and in the new state of Montana, was not unlike the experiences of many other boys his age. In fact, stories about coming of age during that era and in that community can be found in semi-autobiographical books by two of young Evan’s Missoula friends, Norman Maclean (A River Runs Through It) and John K. Hutchens (One Man’s Montana). In 1918-1919, during his freshman year at Missoula County High School, Evan was on the Freshman Debate Team and studied art with Charlotte Kinney, a New York artist visiting Montana for that year. Unfortunately, Evan’s sister Catherine had contracted polio and the family decided to move to Los Angeles, California for her treatment. His 1919- 1920 school year was spent at Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles. The family returned to Missoula at the end of the academic year. In 1920-1921, Evan returned to Missoula County High School for his junior year. He was elected Class Business Manager, was editor-in-chief of The Konah (the weekly student newspaper, Konah is the word for the Bitter Root, in the language of the Shoshone Indians), was a member of the Dramatic Club, and was president of the Art Club (which he organized in the fall of 1920 with Miss Marm of the Art Department as the acting sponsor). In 1922, he graduated from Missoula County High School and entered the University of Montana, also in Missoula. While at the University of Montana, Evan, a member of the Class of 1926, majored in journalism and had a summer job as a Fire Lookout on a nearby mountain. He completed three years of college (he did not graduate), was art editor of the Dramatic Club magazine: “Montana Masquers”, and, in his final year, was an assistant art instructor, teaching art (the “life” class). It was reported that both George Cronyn, a professor of English and dramatics, and Mrs. W.E. Bateman, who had been an art instructor, at the University of Montana, encouraged Evan to go to art school. He was also supported by Frederick Scheuch, “who persuaded his father that a boy with such extraordinary talents would go far in the art world if he was only given the opportunity” (see Edward Evan Reynolds – The Artist). Evan spent the summer of 1925 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and in October, having also considered attending the Chicago Art Institute, Evan moved to New York to study at the Arts Students League. He landed portraiture and commercial freelance art work, to supplement his education and, in 1929, his mother and Catherine visited him in New York. In 1930, Evan travelled to and from Europe by ship. On October 18th, 1930 Edward Evan Reynolds married Evelyn Abi (Eve) Kight in New York City. Sometime in late 1931 or early 1932, Evan went to Phoenix, Arizona “for over six months”, in order to recuperate from a “tuberculosis breakdown”, after which he returned to New York. On September 21st, 1932 Evan’s father, Edward Milton Reynolds died (he had a stroke at age 56, recovered for a year, and then died suddenly of a heart attack), but Evan was unable to attend the funeral (having just returned from Arizona). The following year, however, he traveled to Montana, with his wife Eve, to help his mother dispose of his late father’s belongings. Eve gave birth to a son, whom they named Edward Evan Reynolds, Jr., on August 5th, 1935 in New York City. Thirteen months later, on September 4th, 1936, another son was born, also in New York City, and they named him Robert Depew Reynolds. In the late 1930’s, the family lived at 40 Water Street, Tuckahoe, New York, but, in late 1939, they moved to a custom home that had been built for them, on land that Evan had purchased in 1934, in rural Weston, Connecticut. Unfortunately, the marriage to Eve didn’t work out and they separated in January, 1942, just after the start of World War II, in part because they each needed to live closer to where they worked (Eve in CT and Evan in NYC). Their two young sons were enrolled in a nearby year-round camp and the Weston house was rented from early 1942 until mid- 1946. Now alone, Evan lived initially at the New York City YMCA and then eventually moved to an apartment on West 12th Street in New York. The boys visited their mother and father each once a month. In 1944, Evan’s divorce from Evelyn Abi Kight was finalized and, in early 1945, he became engaged to his girlfriend Margaret Frances Brainerd (to whom he had been introduced when Evan’s sister Catherine and Margaret were classmates in graduate school at Columbia University in New York in 1943). Evan and Margaret were married on September 15, 1945 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. 1946 brought many changes to Evan’s life: he started a 20-year career in New York City newspaper promotional and editorial art direction; he, Margaret, Edward and Robert (Bobby) moved back into the Weston, Connecticut house (where he would reside for the rest of his life); and, on November 16th that year, his mother, Martha W. Reynolds (age 65) married Claude A. Henderson (age 67) in Los Angeles, California. Unfortunately, Evan’s mother, Martha Winnifred Henderson (nee Reynolds), of 2020 Orchard Avenue, Los Angeles, California, died from a heart attack on March 24th, 1948 at the age of 67, and was cremated at Inglewood Crematory in Los Angeles. A week later, Evan and Margaret started their own family. A son, whom they named Marc Gordon Reynolds, was born on March 31, 1948 in the nearby Norwalk (Connecticut) Hospital. Less than a year later, another son, whom they named Steven Clarence Reynolds, was born on March 28, 1949, also in the Norwalk (Connecticut) Hospital. In addition to his long commute (as much as 2.5 hours each way) to and from his job in New York City, combined with artistic endeavors at home, Evan was involved in various roles in the local (Weston and Westport, Connecticut) community. He was, at various points, a Justice of the Peace, a Deacon (for 7 years) at the Norfield Congregational Church, a member of the Weston Charter Commission, a member of the Westport Artists Group, and he did charcoal sketches and provided Indian portraits for various charitable organizations. In 1953, Evan’s son Edward graduated from Staples High School and entered Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. A year later, his son Robert (Bobby) graduated from Staples High School and entered Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. 1960 was another big year for Evan and his family: the mortgage on the Weston house had been paid off; they all attended Margaret’s 35th reunion at Tufts University in May or June; in August the family undertook a lengthy road trip from Connecticut to Los Angeles, via Montana (to show Margaret, Marc & Steve where he had grown up), bringing Evan’s sister Catherine back from Los Angeles with them for a visit; the long gravel driveway to the Weston house was paved in the fall; and, on December 31st, 1960, son Robert Depew Reynolds was married to Sandra Kast in Herkimer, New York. In 1963, Evan was able to attend the marriage of his son Edward Evan Reynolds, Jr. to Judith Lookanoff in Stephenville, Newfoundland, Canada on May 18th. That joyous event was offset, unfortunately, by several sadder periods that year, including son Bobby suddenly leaving his wife and year-old child, a newspaper strike (which reduced Evan’s income), and a bought of salmonella poisoning. In 1966, Evan’s son Marc graduated from Staples High School and entered Boston University. At about the exact same time, the World Telegram and Sun newspaper, where Evan had worked for 16 years, merged with two other New York newspapers in order to survive. In 1967, Evan’s son Marc Gordon Reynolds married Barbara Sauter in Newtown, Connecticut on March 25th; the New York newspaper (the World-Journal-Tribune), where Evan had only recently started working, went out of business on May 5th; and son Steven Clarence Reynolds graduated from Staples High School and entered Tufts University. From 1967 to 1973, Evan continued to live, work, draw, and paint in Weston, Connecticut. He and Margaret spent as much time as possible with all (4) of his sons, their wives, and his grandchildren. Evan revised his Last Will & Testament on September 20th, 1972 and unexpectedly died on the morning of May 30th, 1973 at Southside Hospital in Islip (Bay Shore), Suffolk County, New York following an “Acute Cerebral Hemorrhage” or stroke that he had had 3 days prior (attending a wedding on May 27th, 1973) and as a consequence of long-term “Hypertensive Cardio-Vascular Disease” or high blood pressure. Obituaries appeared in the Bridgeport Telegram (May 31, 1973), Norwalk Hour (May 31, 1973), New York Times (June 1, 1973), Westport News (June 1, 1973), Weston Forum (June 6, 1973), and Fairpress (June 6, 1973). His body was cremated on June 1, 1973 at Mt. Grove Cemetery in Bridgeport, Connecticut and a memorial service for Evan was held on June 2nd, 1973 at the Norfield Congregational Church in Weston, Connecticut. His ashes were interred on June 9th, 1973 in the Brainerd family plot at West Parish Cemetery in Andover, Massachusetts. Margaret Frances Brainerd graduated with an AB degree Cum Laude from Tufts College, 1935, with a BS degree in Social Work from Simmons College, 1936, and with an MSW degree from Columbia Univ., 1943. Alexander Irving and published in 2007 by Book Art Press. The following is an excerpt from the article entitled "Utopia Lost: Contradictions and Coincidences of the Woodstock Colony": On May 24, 1989, Life magazine pulled a photograph of a couple at the festival from its special issue commemorating it and blew it up for a full-page ad in the New York Times which bore the headline WOODSTOCK- WERE YOU THERE? The barefoot male in the picture, with frizzy hair, headband and pendant, epitomized the public view of “hippie.” It is not likely that Life knew in selecting the photo that this hippie actually lived and worked in the town of Woodstock. He did and his name was Robert Depew Reynolds. He was an artist, a poet and a social reformer. In the photograph, although tattered and barefoot, he assumes an air of quiet dignity. Reynolds espoused many causes of social justice and often proved a thorn in the side of town officials. His oratory style was booming and lyrical as he exercised his own “Muhammad Ali School of Oral Poetry” to right the wrongs of the land and once caused lasting commotion by hanging an enormous banner out of his apartment window on the corner of Rock City Road and Tinker Street which quoted the words of Joe Hill “Don’t Mourn, Organize!” Born in Westport, Connecticut, son of the Art Director for the New York World Telegram & Sun, Reynolds studied religion and philosophy before becoming a photographer’s agent in Chicago and New York. Reynolds started to sketch in Korea and Japan while in the U.S. Marines and developed a portraiture style with pastels which resembled oils and produced a very popular series depicting Native Americans. He was running a hot dog stand in New York City when he wasn’t painting in 1963 when he was written up by the Daily News as a “freelance, philosophizing artist.” Unhappy with his suburban home and his ulcer, he walked away from his former life to focus on his artistic vocation in Woodstock. There he blossomed until struck by a van on the street in 1983. He died the following year. Robert was involved in a traffic accident on 31 Dec 1983. Marc and family (wife Barbara and sons Darren and Sean) moved back to Weston, significantly updating and enlarging the Reynolds family home in a way that incorporated an apartment for Marc’s widowed mother, Margaret, shortly after he received his graduate degree. His new job, at Weston Woods Studios, a multi-national mini-conglomerate that primarily converted beloved children’s books into film and video in mutiple languages, combined both of his MBA concentrations as well as his undergraduate interest in Cultural Anthropology. Marc dealt with authors, translators, publishers and distribution companies all over the world and travelled extensively during his time in this position. In 1985, as son Darren graduated from high school and headed off to Boston University, Marc accepted a job offer from the Walt Disney Company and Disney moved Marc, Barbara, and Sean from Weston to the Los Angeles suburbs. The Reynolds family roots or connections were strong in LA, in that Marc’s aunt Catherine still lived there, his paternal grandmother Martha Davis (nee Reynolds) and other relatives were buried there, and his brother Edward and family were just up the coast in the San Francisco Bay area. During the (13) years that they lived in the LA area, Marc moved on from the Walt Disney Company to the M. H. Loe Company and then to the accounting and consulting firm of Arthur Andersen/Andersen Consulting; aunt Catherine died; brother Ed and his wife Judy moved nearby; son Darren transferred from BU to UCLA and graduated with a degree in Economics; the Weston house was sold and mother Margaret moved from Weston to join them in their home; son Sean graduated from prep school, entered and graduated from UC Berkeley; both sons married (Darren to a San Francisco native and Sean to a Seattle native); and then, in 1998 (shortly after Sean’s wedding), Marc received an unexpected job offer from a law firm in Seattle and the firm moved Marc, Barbara, and Margaret north. Marc joined the Summit Law Group, as their Executive Director, on January 1st 1999 and would remain there until his retirement in 2012. Growing from 27 to more than 35 attorneys, the firm was well regarded in the Seattle area and Marc became active in the professional organization, for those who manage law firms and law departments in corporations, at the local (including president of the 250-member chapter), state, and national levels (winning national awards for article writing and diversity/inclusion programs). During all this, while president of the local chapter, he went back to the books and, at age 56, added the professional certification of CLM to his educational credentials. His Draft Lottery number was 223 and only numbers up to 190 were drafted that year. Instead, he began a teaching career in his home town. His first assignment was the 6th grade. Steve soon became involved in local community theatre directing a play and musical in Wilton. He was appointed Weston H.S. drama teacher in the spring of 1974. In September, 1974 he began graduate work in theatre at the University of Michigan receiving his MA in 1975. He married Nancy Sandercock that spring before returning to teaching public high school English and Theatre in Hazel Park, MI from 1975-77. In the fall of 1977 Steve returned to graduate school in theatre at University of Michigan. His daughter Cory Radcliffe was born in 1978. After finishing his Ph.D., Steve began his college theatre teaching career in 1981 at Wittenberg University in Springfield, OH. Daughter Elizabeth Keats was born in Springfield in 1982. For the next 31 years Steve taught acting, playwriting and dramatic literature and directed over sixty plays, musicals, and original works both at Wittenberg and elsewhere. He was divorced from Nancy in 1995 and married Shelley Carpenter Dawson in 2001. He retired from Wittenberg in 2012 after becoming a full professor, department chair and Director of General Education. He was recognized with Wittenberg’s Omericon Delta Kappa junior faculty Excellence in Teaching Award in 1983, the Matthies Research Award in 1986, and the Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award in 2012. Steve received a Gold Medallion from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in 2008 for his work for the Festival. Anna Belle’s granddaughter, Helen Louise (Strickland) Emery, provided the following: Anna Belle came to Chico, in the Paradise Valley, to work at the Chico Hot Springs as a nurse. It is hard to imagine but there were a lot of men working in the mines and farming, but not many women in the Paradise Valley. The men tried to impress them to win their hand. It was said that Franklin Strickland had a nice house and farm as well as matched horses. Problem was though, he had a broken hip that left him limping and with a lack of confidence, but Anna Belle chose him as her husband. The following excerpt is from Violet’s autobiography: When Franklin was nineteen, he was cutting cedar posts alone and a tree fell on him. He was knocked into a small depression and his leg was crushed to the hip. His horse Hazel was very good and came when he called her. He pulled himself up her leg and into the saddle. She swam the Yellowstone River which was running full of blocks of ice and took him to his Uncle Sam's place where he was put to bed. Because he could wriggle his toes he thought his leg wasn't broken. Finally gangrene developed. The stench was so bad that Aunt Katie sent someone to Livingston for the doctor. There was little the doctor could do, but he did get the gangrene stopped. He poured whiskey on the hip and set it on fire. Then he scraped off the dead tissue, scorched some flour on the stove and put that on the hip. Papa said that the flesh was dead and he couldn't feel anything. It took many months for him to get well. From then on he had a beastly temperament. He found fault with everyone for the rest of his life. He lived to be 87 years old. His hurt leg was 2 1/2 inches shorter then the other one. At their wedding Anna Belle’s brother William was not only a witness to the ceremony, he was Franklin’s Best Man too. Anna Belle, like her older brother Albert and younger brother Lewis, had diabetes. She spent 3 years in the East Gallatin Sanitarium in Bozeman, Montana and additional time in the Oregon State Hospital in Salem. She was residing in the Bozeman Sanitarium when she died. The cause of her death was reported to be gangrene of right leg with “myocarditis chronic” as a contributing factor. It’s said that Louise Conlin’s middle initial doesn’t really stand for anything; her parents couldn’t decide on a middle name other than the initial “M”. She liked the idea of being called "Louise Montana." The Catholic Church however, turned “M” into “Minerva” upon her baptism at the age of eight. (source: FamilySearch.org) According to his daughter, Helen Louise (Strickland) Emery, it’s unknown what happened to her father Vernon. She says she doesn’t know who, if anyone, is even buried in his grave and doesn’t know when he died. She says he just disappeared. The following information was found on FamilySearch.org related to Vernon: As WWII began in Europe, more work was available in the Portland, OR, area; so Vernon moved his family to Camas, WA, where he found work at Camas Paper Mill. Housing was scarce as many people moved to the area. They found housing in the Camas Auto Park. After a series of Helen's illnesses and injuries, Vernon deserted the family. He worked first through a union as a pipe fitter. Then he joined the Army. They mutually divorced on 29 Mar 1943 after Louise found where he was. He served in Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He answered a mail call one day at the same time as another Strickland and met his cousin in the field. He was left for dead on the battle field after seeing most of his friends shot as they left the landing barge. The bullet went through his shoulder. As the Japanese bayoneted the wounded, they merely nicked his shoulder as he lay hidden under another body. He crawled at night back to his unit where he yelled out his ID and was sent to a Red Cross ship which was hit by a suicide bomber. Many of the doctors and nurses around him died and one of ears was permanently deafened. His battle fatigue put him in a mental hospital to recuperate. His father protested and had him released but he attempted suicide. He remarried and had two more sons. He learned to stucco houses so well he was in demand. After Ruby had a stroke and could no longer care for herself, Vernon again abandoned his wife, two sons, and two step-daughters. In 1966 Vernon inherited $9,000 from his father’s estate. He picked up the money at the courthouse in Livingston and was last seen getting into John Warnick's car with John's brother. He never returned to pick up his government checks. His sister Violet diligently tried to find him; but no word as ever been heard of him since. His daughter Helen feels that his gravestone does not have a grave beneath it. When the other members of his wife’s family (Louis, Emily (Stewart), Earl, Edna, Claude, & Maude Heck), who were also homesteading near Hazny, decided to move via covered wagon (yes, a covered wagon – they didn’t own a car) to Boise in 1921; Lewis, Winnie, and newborn son Alvin, stayed behind. Lewis and Winnie joined the Hecks & Alsagers the following year and settled in the Emmett, Idaho area. Lewis, made his living by farming. Farms were between 40-50 acres in size. The crops they grew were strawberries, wheat, beans, chickens, turkeys. They were share croppers - they didn't actually own the farm, but worked the land for the owner and shared the profits with the owner. While in Emmett, Lewis came down with “sugar diabetes”. The disease was very rough on the family and made it hard for Lewis to make a living. As a result Lewis could no longer run the farm. He moved to Victor, Montana and worked for other farmers in the area. Lewis lived in Victor for the remainder of his life. When Lewis died, Winnie moved to Enterprise, Oregon in 1946 with her daughter Dorothy and son Richard. Lewis’s reported cause of death was: Cardiac embolism due to diabetic gangrene of left foot. Lewis is buried in the Victor Cemetery, Ravalli County, Montana; Plot: Lot P7, Grave 2, No. 1266. “Winnie” is buried in the Enterprise Cemetery. Alvin’s cause of death not specifically determined. He had bypass surgery after having a heart attack/aneurism just prior to his death on 31 Jan 1996. Alvin served in the US Army Air Corps in WWII and was a member of Elgin Lodge # 67 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, York & Scottish Rites of Freemasonry. He was also a member of the Al Kader Temple of the Shrine, Blue Mountain chapter, Order of Eastern Star. The exact date of death is not known however. She was born Dec. 15, 1946, to Alvin Lewis and Frances G. Blodgett Reynolds at Hamilton, Montana. She grew up in Enterprise, Oregon graduating from Enterprise High School in 1964. She served in Vietnam with the U.S. Air Force. She was an officer for the Oregon State Police at The Dalles; later she moved to La Grande. She was employed for 27 years by Boise Cascade Corp. as a truck driver and later as a mill worker. She also worked with abused children. She was a member of the La Grande United Methodist Church. She enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking. Marge was born September 5, 1922 in Emmett, Idaho, and spent her formative years in Victor, Montana. She was married to Harold E. Irwin on June 10, 1939. They lived in Corvallis one year before moving to the Rye Creek area near Darby to work for Harpers Logging Company. They remained in Darby for nearly 30 years, where they were involved in logging, ranching, supporting local school athletics and organizations including the Eagles and Elks Lodge. Later, they lived in Hamilton and Mesa, Arizona. She had been living in Payson (Arizona) for 12 years prior to her death, where she enjoyed golf, Bingo, many friends, and her faithful companion, a collie-shepherd named "Babe". She loved her family, traveling, the outdoors, home-making, bowling, golfing, gardening and dancing. He lived in Alexandria and in Arlington, Virginia, working in the Marine Headquarters for 3 years. Duane earned a Certificate of Business from Western Montana University, where he also played baseball for 2 years. He later earned a degree in Business Administration from the University of Montana. Duane passed away from complications related to a surgery he had on Wednesday Aug 16th 2017, to clear a blocked carotid artery. His doctors told him if he didn’t have the operation he could face having a debilitating stroke. It was his wish that no funeral or other services be held. The weekend before his operation, he attended one of the “Heck” Family reunions in Enterprise, Oregon. The reunion this year was held at Bob and Mary Kay Pace’s home in Joseph, Oregon. The relatives attending the reunion were not aware of his upcoming operation. Ed was raised in Darby, Montana and attended Darby schools and worked in the family logging and ranching business. He married Rosella M. DuVall in 1970. Together, they raised two children, Gary, of Hamilton, and Mary Ann Pinney of Doniphan, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Rosella and a brother, Duane (Linda) of Hamilton. He leaves behind many Bitterroot Valley friends, his two adult children, and 8 grandchildren, including Ashley Irwin, Elizabeth Irwin, Trevor Irwin, Alan Pinney, Rosella Pinney, Rajhan Pinney, Alakye DuVall, and Eugene Reed. He is survived also by brothers William L. Irwin (Kathy) of Grantsdale, Larry L. Irwin of Stevensville, and Gene H. Irwin (Kristina) of Chandler, Arizona. Over the course of this life, Ed worked at numerous logging jobs, on farms and ranches in Montana, and in building maintenance in Rapid City, South Dakota. He was an excellent bowler and was a top-notch spin-fisherman, although he enjoyed all types of fishing. As was his wish, no services were held. He grew up in Victor, where he went to Victor Grammar School and then went to Victor High School where he graduated from in 1943. During the summer of 1942, when Harold was 17 years old, Harold, his brother Alvin, and his best friend Hubert Copeland rode a freight train from Missoula, Montana to Wallace, Idaho where they had dinner. In the morning they started walking to Avery, Idaho to look for work at the railroad switching yard. Around 8:00 am a flatbed truck came by and it was going the direction they wanted to go, so they stuck out their thumbs to hitch a ride. The driver stopped to pick them up, so they got on the back of the truck. The driver said he was going to Avery so they didn't have to walk any further. They later found out that if that truck hadn't come, they would have had to walk 30 miles to get to Avery. After eating breakfast in Avery a railroad detective came to the restaurant and wanted to know their names and to see some I.D. He asked them what they were doing in Avery. Alvin decided to be the spokesman and told him they heard there was work there and the detective said "Well there is no work for ya here." Then he told them that there would be a freight train coming through Avery that morning heading east. He told them that they were to catch that train. They hopped aboard the freight train headed for Missoula and as they got closer to Montana, Harold and Hubert decided they still wanted to head west while Alvin decided to continue on back home to Montana. So when the train came to an incline, Harold and Hubert jumped off. They walked back up to a road and then they hitchhiked to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, eventually making it down to Walla Walla, Washington. At 1 point in Walla Walla, Harold and Hubert ended up sitting on the curb of a road and they didn't any more than sit down and a cop came by and wanted to know what "the heck" they were doing sitting there on the street. The officer took them to the Police Station for further questioning. During the questioning, he wanted to know how much money they had. They asked Hubert, and he said he didn't have anything. Then they asked Harold how much money he had, and he said, "thirty-three." The sergeant said, "thirty-three what?" Harold answered, "thirty-three cents.” Harold and Hubert told the Police Sergeant that they were looking for work. Harold eventually got a job working on a farm in Dayton. Hubert wasn’t so lucky and returned home. Harold enlisted in the Military (Marine Corps) on 05 May 1943 right after graduating high school and attained the rank of Corporal when he was discharged. His enlistment papers identified his age as 18, his height as 5’10 ½” tall, his weight as 152 lbs, his eyes blue, his hair brown, and his complexion “ruddy”. He served in the Marine Corps during WWII as part of the 5th Division, 2nd Battalion, 27th Regiment, Fox Company, which was part of the 1st Marine landing and subsequent battle for Iwo Jima. During the battle he was injured twice; once on his hand and later on, on the back of his neck, and was awarded a Purple Heart for both injuries. The 2nd injury was the most severe though; he said he was watching the flag raising on Mt. Suribachi and was “hit”. He woke up in a ship’s hospital and was taken to Hawaii to recuperate. He was Honorably Discharged from the Marine Corp on 4 Jan 1946. Harold and Roxaine (Roxy) met on October 21, 1943. After completing Marine Corps Basic Training and being promoted to Private First Class, Harold was assigned to the Puget Sound Naval Ammunition Depot located in Bremerton, Washington. It was while stationed there that he met his wife-to-be, Roxaine Carter. Harold had enlisted on 05 May 1943 at Butte, Montana and had gone through Marine Corps. Basic Training at Camp Pendleton, San Diego, California and was sent to the Naval Ammunition Depot in Bremerton. His 19th birthday was October 18th. He and two buddies, Paul Ceynowa and Boyd W. Donley, planned to celebrate his birthday in Seattle and Vancouver. They missed the bus for Canada and wandered into the Seattle Service Men's Club. Roxaine Carter was a JVH (Junior Volunteer Hostess) at the club where there was a dance underway. Two of her girlfriends, Corinne Weatherston and Lois Cochran, dared her to go over across the dance floor to talk to the three marines and get one to dance. She accepted the dare and got a conversation going with the three marines. They talked and talked and after a while when no one asked her to dance, she started back across the floor to where the girls were. Harold then took off his white cap and tossed it to the other guys and asked her to dance. During the next month, the three Marines came across on the ferry as often as they got leave. They had a Halloween dinner in Roxaine’s and Corinne’s apartment of chili and pumpkin pie. Corinne and Roxaine had a one-room apartment in the basement of a 3 story house owned by Mrs. Alice Italie. The Marines were sent to Camp Pendleton, California, at the end of November, 1943. Harold and Paul had both applied to and were accepted into the 1st Raider Battalion at Camp Pendleton where they both underwent a very strenuous and intensive physical training program. Harold and Roxaine corresponded over the next several months. Harold was given a furlough in June and traveled north to Vancouver, WA, where his family had gathered to spend time together before he was to ship out. He spent some time in Vancouver visiting his mother Ida, and then he and his brother, Alvin, came on up to Seattle. He proposed and presented Roxaine with an engagement ring to wear, and a wedding band to keep. The Marine Corps 5th Division, which Harold's unit was part of, was sent to Camp Tarawa, Hilo, Hawaii for additional training prior to the Iwo Jima landing. The 27th Marine Division of which he was a part of, was scheduled to assault and take control of the Japanese-built airplane landing strips on Iwo Jima. He sent a "Dear John" letter breaking the engagement because he feared he would not come back. He was wounded by shrapnel on his hands, head, and neck and was sent back to Hawaii for recuperation. When he was well, he rejoined his unit for the planned invasion of Japan. The atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended the war in August 1945 though, preventing the need for an invasion. The 27th Marines were sent in to Japan as occupation forces instead. A "point system" was set up for the return of servicemen to the U.S. Harold returned to Camp Pendleton, California at the end of 1945 and was honorably discharged in January 1946. He returned to Darby, Montana for several months and went to work for his brother-in-law Harold Irwin, who had his own logging business there. It wasn't until November 1946 that he sent a letter to Roxaine. She answered him and invited him to come to Seattle for a visit. They talked and decided to get married New Year’s Eve 1946/1947. Harold and Roxaine were married 1 minute after midnight on 1 Jan 1947. The wedding took place at the home of Dr. Ridenour, minister of the Queen Anne Christian Church. The service began at 11:55 pm and ended at 12:05 am. Several people were in attendance, including witnesses Ruth Carter (Roxaine’s mother), Richard (Dick) Edgerton, and a friend of Roxaine’s named Mary Elsberry. The Seattle Times carried an article about the wedding being the 1st one of the New Year. Harold and Roxaine went on the Princess Marguerite to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada for their honeymoon. Roxaine had also enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. She was sworn in in 1945 and had orders to report to basic training in North Carolina (Camp Lejeune). She was to leave August 17, 1945, but the Japanese surrendered on August 14, 1945 as a result of the dropping of the Atomic Bombs. She never left home though; she got her discharge papers and discharge button mailed to her at home. After the war, Harold went to the University of Washington in 1947; he worked for the U.S. Forest Service for a while; he worked for Sunshine Bakery; and later on he went to Arlington Aeronautical School becoming an Engine Mechanic. He got a job with the Boeing Company in Seattle in May of 1950, where he worked for 38 years holding various positions, including working at the Boeing plant in Wichita, Kansas. He retired from Boeing as a 1st level Supervisor in the Industrial Engineering group. During the course of his career at Boeing he worked on many different aircraft there: the 707 (Dash-80), 727, 737, 747, 757, and 767 aircrafts and derivatives. During his retirement he enjoyed playing Volleyball at the Renton Senior Center, playing Softball on a Seniors league, working in his garden, taking his daily walks around his home, and travelling with his wife. Harold’s wife, Roxaine, devoted 50+ years to personally researching and compiling genealogy records on her family, the “Carters”, and Harold’s family, the “Reynolds”. She was a member of the DAR (National #: 0760667) and could trace her lineage back to “Phineas Carter” of Massachusetts (1727 – 1809), who fought in the Revolutionary War. David received an athletic scholarship to attend the Lower Columbia Community College located in Longview, Washington. He stayed there for a year before transferring to Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. He stayed there for a year and then transferred to Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington to play baseball, where his former High School baseball coach, Walter "Spike" Grosvenor coached. He earned his BA degree in Education with a minor in Speech and Drama while at Whitworth. It was while he was attending college there that he also met his wife to be, Helena Ansotigue. Helena was an art student, whose advisor, Walt Grosvenor, was David's baseball coach. Although Coach Grosvenor did not introduce them to each other, he supported their eventual relationship. They actually met the prior sports season when David was a basketball player and Helena was a cheerleader. Because her brother was also on the Yell Squad and they spent a lot of time together, David initially thought her brother was her boyfriend so he didn't ask her out. After discovering otherwise, David asked Helena to go to the basketball coach’s house after a game, an event she and her fellow cheerleaders attended regularly. Instead of driving with the Yell Squad, she told them she was going with David. His car would not start, however, and David was surprised that Helena knew how to clutch-start a 4-on-the-floor transmission, as he pushed his car in front of the gym. That was their first "date," a term Helena used loosely because it would be several months later before David actually paid for a real date. after she made him follow up on a promised to take her to dinner in Seattle. He had pledged that he would to take her to the Space Needle after she reluctantly pretended to be his wife so they could attend a---what else free dinner for married couples only, promoting ownerships in the Rio Rancho Estates housing development in New Mexico. After David graduated from Whitworth in 1974, he and Helena were married in her high school gym and moved to Yelm Washington, where he taught PE and Health at Yelm High School. He was also a football, baseball, and basketball coach and they both volunteered to help start the first Young Life Club there. Both Jana and Jason were born at St. Peter's Hospital in Olympia in 1979 and 1981 respectively. David and Helena moved to Kent, Washington in 1984 when David accepted a combined 7-8th grade teaching job with the Christian Faith School (CFS) when it opened in 1984 (K-8). As the school added grades, David became the high school Social Studies, Health and PE teacher. He created a junior high boys basketball program which became a high school Junior Varsity and eventually a Varsity (SeaTac B League) Basketball program. In addition to being a teacher and basketball coach, he became the school's first Athletic Director and was elected to a Sea-Tac B League leadership position. His 1993 Varsity Boys’ basketball team went 20-0 in regular season play and took 4th place in its first appearance at the WA State B Boys basketball tournament in Spokane, WA In 1994, David left CFS and became a licensed insurance agent but resigned after a few months when the evening work requirements conflicted with his new coaching job as the offensive coordinator with the defending AA Boys’ Basketball champion Franklin High School Quakers. The team's head coach, Ron Drayton had helped David build the CFS basketball program, coaching junior high when David began creating the high school program. The 1995 Franklin team successfully defended its WA State AA championship. While coaching at Franklin during the evenings, David was requested to be a full-time substitute Health and PE teacher at a nearby Seattle School District facility named Sharples Alternative School. The experience was so dangerous that he didn't tell his family any details until several years later when he fulfilled a promise he made to his children to write a book, which he entitled "So Who Cares." David was recruited to teach and coach at Sedro Woolley High School so the family moved to the Mt. Vernon area in the fall of 1995. He taught Social Studies and Health and coached Varsity Boys’ Basketball and Baseball teams on which his son Jason played. In the summer of 1998, one of Jason's childhood friends, who was playing High School Varsity Basketball in Federal Way, recommended that David apply for the head coaching position at his school when it opened. From 1998 to 2005 David taught at Thomas Jefferson High School in Federal Way, Washington where he again coached baseball and basketball. After retiring from teaching/coaching in 2005, he began teaching private pitching lessons at the Kent Bulldog Baseball Training Center. He also began pitching for a regional hardball league called the Puget Sound Senior Baseball League, whose motto is "Don't Go Soft, Play Hardball." (PSSBL men and women's player ages range from 21 to 80+.) David continues to pitch, hit and play 1st base on 4 senior men's baseball teams. Two are 45+ and 55+ teams in the Seattle area; the other two are PSSBL all-star teams who compete at the top senior men's World Series in the nation held annually in Ft. Myers, FL. The all-stars teams----Washington Titan's 55+, 60+ and 65+ ---have won over 10 World Championships and David has been named team MVP twice. As of 2017, he still plays baseball and works his day job as a sales rep with ADT Securities, which he started when waiting for baseball pitching students to get out of school in 2006. Val married Kevin while in graduate school and they moved to Lyman, Skagit County, Washington in 1976. She and her husband built their own home, and two garages on family property, sawing some of the timbers from trees grown on the farm, doing the electrical, carpentry, roofing, cement and plumbing work themselves. Val did the landscaping, and included dozens of fruit trees and berry plants. She preserves the fruit and presses cider every year. Val worked and taught biology at Skagit Valley College located at Mt. Vernon, Skagit County, Washington for 32 years, retiring in Dec 2016. She taught hundreds of students the fundamental principles needed for a better career and life in science and health science. Much of Val's free time since moving to the Skagit Valley has been in helping to maintain, improve and rebuild the family farm, inherited from Kevin's parents and grandparents. For 40+ years, she has helped in adding miles of water systems, ditching, fencing and landscaping to the farm, brought in thousands of bales of hay, and cared for hundreds of livestock. The farm was first purchased in 1902 by one of Kevin's paternal great grandfathers, Max Prevedell, who immigrated to the United States from Austria in 1886. Max and his wife Marie, who also emigrated from Austria, used the land to become quite self-sufficient. They started a dairy farm, raised and preserved their own crops and livestock, and logged and sawed their own lumber to maintain the farm. Kevin's other paternal great-grandfather, Henry Patrick Mullen and his son, Henry Mullen (Kevin's grandfather) were local millwrights and in about 1907, agreed to build the Prevedells a 4100 square foot barn to store hay, house equipment and provide for the dairy operation. The Mullens used timber from the Prevedell's farm, sawed lumber on their mills, and used horses to erect the 42-foot high barn. Thanks to the work of Val, Kevin, and their family, the barn is still standing and is fully functional. It houses hay, equipment, and livestock. In 2007, the barn was in danger of collapsing. The roof had deteriorated, the wooden foundation was rotting, the exterior was crumbling, and the floor was buckling. Val and Kevin applied to the Washington State Heritage Barn Program and were awarded $44,000 in matching State funds to restore the barn in 2008. With careful planning, budgeting, and the application of skills and knowledge, Val and Kevin personally gave the barn a new roof, concrete foundation and floor, windows, door and hundreds of yards of siding milled from cedar grown on the farm. The only part of the restoration that was outsourced was the initial stage of the roof repair. All other work, including that of architect, engineer, project manager, financier, contractor, millwright, metal worker, carpenter, heavy equipment operator, logger, roofer, was completed by Val and Kevin. The barn remained open for public viewing for 10 years. In 2010, Val and Kevin built a 3/4 acre pond in a wetland area of the farm, complete with inlet and outlet streams, surrounded by a small Douglas-fir and Red Cedar forest and hundreds of rhododendrons in a park-like setting. Native plants were used throughout. Trout live in the pond and spawn in the inlet stream, ducks nest in the shrubbery and deer browse on the vegetation. For six years, she served as a teaching assistant for the UW's geology field course, which was held each summer in Dillon, Montana. While at the University of Washington, she participated in Cross Country and Track and Field. From 2011 to 2014, Emily was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, where she conducted research on basalts from Salal Glacier, Bridge River, Mt. Meager, and Mt. Garibaldi, volcanic centers that comprise the northernmost Cascade arc. Jesse ran Cross Country for Skagit Valley College, and later, ran Cross Country and Track for Western Washington University. Jesse graduated from WWU in 2008 with a BA in Political Science. Jesse attended the United States Marine Corps Officer Candidate School (OCS) in the summer of 2007, and upon graduation from WWU in 2008, was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant into the USMC. Initially completing training in Quantico, VA, Jesse was later stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA with the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Division as a Logistics Officer. He then completed two deployments; the first to Bahrain as part of a training mission in 2009, and the second as part of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (SOC) to the Middle East in 2011. He was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant in fall of 2011. After a lot of convincing, Jesse eventually agreed to go on a date with Marcie in the fall of 2010. They continued a long- distance relationship while Jesse finished his commitments with the USMC, and Marcie continued school at OSU-CVM. Jesse joined Marcie in Corvallis, OR in fall of 2011 - studying forestry for 1.5 years at OSU - until he was hired as a Program Planner at Janicki Industries in Sedro-Woolley, WA. While employed at Janicki Industries, Jesse continued his service with the USMC Active Reserves within the Combat Logistics Battalion 24 at Joint Base Lewis-McChord as a Captain. Early in his career he wrote CAD/CAM software for NC Programmers to use in order to program 2 ½ Axis and 5-Axis CNC machines. Don’s wife, Liz, went to college at Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island, majoring in Culinary Arts and minoring in Business Administration. She later worked as a Private Chef on a Yacht in the Bahamas and as an Executive Chef on the island of Bonaire. Don and Liz met on the island of Bonaire when Don and his brother Skip (Paul) were on a scuba diving trip there. One of Don’s hobbies/side-professions was as a scuba Instructor. He taught scuba diving for almost 20 years attaining the level of Master Instructor through the PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) organization. Don and his brother Skip travelled to many different locations to go diving; the Caribbean, Mexico, South Pacific, and British Columbia, Canada. Several of their favorite dive locations were around the north end of Vancouver Island, BC. In June of 1990, Don and his brother Skip, located and dove on an abandoned dry dock discarded decades ago, that had been sunk just off the Magnolia Bluff in Elliot Bay. They made a video of what they saw there which Don took and showed to members of Greenpeace, which eventually led to him showing the video to the Washington State Dept. of Fisheries. The video showed the drydock being covered with dozens of abandoned fishing nets which were continuing to trap and kill different species of fish, birds, seals, and even a sea lion. Don & Skip later helped re-locate and mark the dry dock for the Washington State Dept. of Fisheries in order for them to clean up the Ghost Nets. This was one of the first efforts to help clean up the abandoned Ghost Nets of Puget Sound. The story was carried in the USA Today and Seattle Times newspapers and was picked up on all of the local TV stations in Seattle. Don & Skip had their 15 minutes of “fame”. Don & Liz got married in 1991 and lived in Kent, Washington. They moved from Kent to the town of Enumclaw, King, Washington in 2001. Liz was elected to the Enumclaw City Council for a 4-year term and then ran for and was elected as the 1st female Mayor of Enumclaw for 2 terms, from 2010 to 2017. Don opted to take an early retirement in Dec 2014 from The Boeing Company when his job was relocated to St Louis. His retirement years saw him doing multiple activities to keep active; one of which was being a Seasonal worker with the City of Enumclaw’s Parks Department where he mowed the baseball fields for the Enumclaw Baseball Complex and the different City Parks. Del’s parents met at a social gathering during harvest time and married in November 1919. With older brother Alvin in tow, Del’s parents moved to Emmett, Idaho, in 1922, to be near Del’s mother’s parents (Louis and Emily Florence (Stewart) Heck) and her other siblings (Earl, Claude, Maude, & Edna Heck). They returned to the Victor area in 1926 though, where Del had been born, two years later. Del worked on the family ranch and milked cows mornings and evenings for the Gould family and later for Bob Chamberlin. In 1945, Del talked his mother into signing papers for enlisting in the U.S. Marines, as his brother Harold did. Del was 17 when he enlisted. He returned to Hamilton, Montana in June of 1946. Del went to work at Taber Lumber Mill and the following year he married Doris Louise Falk. In 1950, Del was recalled to active duty for the Korean War. He received several decorations for his service, including a Purple Heart for wounds received in action. Del attained the rank of Master Sergeant in the Marine Corps. In spring of 1952, Del returned to Hamilton and began raising a family with his wife Doris. Del continued his military career by participating in the Army, Air Force, and Airborne Reserves. Del worked for many years at Anaconda Lumber Mills in Hamilton and evenings at the Texaco station. He later worked for U.S. Public Health Service and Ravalli County Road Department from which he retired. Del was a life member of the Hamilton Elks Lodge and was active at the Eagles. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed hunting, fishing and packing into the mountains with his brothers-in-law, Richard Falk, and the late Hank Falk. Del also enjoyed his children’s school activities and attended many concerts and athletic events. Dorothy and her brother Richard (Dick) moved to Enterprise with their mother, Ida Winifred, in 1946. She attended Enterprise elementary school and met her husband-to-be when she was in High School. Story has it that Jack was sitting in the visiting team’s bleachers at an Enterprise High School Football game when he saw a girl dressed up as a Majorette for the Enterprise side. Jack stated to a friend right then and there that “he was going to marry that girl in the Majorette’s uniform”. That girl ended up being Dorothy. Jack and Dorothy’s early years together were spent living in logging camps and in Troy, Oregon, before finally locating on Depot St. in Enterprise. Jack was born to Ora and Helen (Green) Pace at home on Prairie Creek. Jack learned the meaning of hard work while growing up on Crow Creek and Elk Mountain ranches. After graduating eighth grade from Pratt School, Jack ranched for his dad, worked for the Dorrance Ranch, enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was stationed in Okinawa at the end of WWII. Jack and Dorothy’s home in Enterprise, along with the home of Dorothy’s brother Dick, was the site of many Heck/Reynolds/Pace/Irwin family reunions. A lot of the “kids” attending those reunions learned to water ski at Wallowa Lake behind Jack’s and Dick’s ski boats. Dorothy was a “Red Hat” and participated in many of the activities in Enterprise. Upon graduation, Swede attended Blue Mountain Community College (BMCC), where he majored in Liberal Arts. He was drafted into the Army in 1970 and completed basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington. He was stationed at Fort Benning, Ga., and belonged to the 1st Battalion (Airborne), 507th Infantry. Swede met his wife to be, Debbie Albrecht, while attending BMCC. On Dec. 19, 1971, they were married. On Jan 31, 1973, they were blessed with their daughter Kimberly Ann Pace. After a time logging in Enterprise, they moved to Honolulu, where Swede worked as a developer and contractor. It was here where he worked on high-rise buildings perfecting his skills as a master carpenter. On Jan 23, 1976, Swede and Debbie proudly announced the birth of their son David Lee Pace. Swede raised his young family in Hawaii until the mid ’80s, when they decided to bring their children back to Enterprise. It is then, where Swede began his venture in the log home business. Next, Swede started “Lee Pace Construction” before Debbie and he moved to the Hermiston area, in the ’90s. Duff studied at Judson Baptist College and later on was a teacher at Enterprise High School. He was a Senior Class Advisor and also coached Junior High Football. He won the University of Oregon’s “High School Social Studies Teacher of the Year” award in 2007. Duff also earned the Eastern Oregon University (EOU) Inspirational Teacher of the year award in 2014. Early in his married life, Dick worked as a logger in the woods of Wallowa County and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Dick started work at the Wallowa County Grain Growers in Enterprise Oregon in 1958 after leaving the Navy and he retired from there in 1998. Dick was active in just about every aspect of the Enterprise community; someone simply needed to identify a need for help and Dick was there lending a hand. Dick was a member of the Eagle Cap VFW Post, BPO Elks Lodge, past member of the Enterprise Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of the Enterprise Christian Church. He was an avid supporter of all youth athletics in Wallowa County and was one of the original founders of the Little League organization of Wallowa County and could always be counted on to provide leadership and support. Dick loved the outdoors and all activities and it was not uncommon to see him as an active participant in and at local sporting events. One of his favorite activities was watching the Enterprise High School football games. In his spare time, Dick enjoyed playing golf with his friends and family, and going fishing. Dick and Rose’s home, along with Dick’s sister Dorothy and her husband’s home, was the site of many past “Heck Family Reunions”; roasted whole pigs, volleyball games, visiting with relatives, and the “Us vs. Them” (Oregon/Washington Reynolds vs. the Idaho “Alsagers”) softball game were highlights of the reunions. Many of the nights at these reunions saw games of poker played into the wee hours; it’s funny how everybody that played always said they “won”. Edward and Levinna (Reynolds) Holmes can be seen in the 1850 US Census for North Madison, Jefferson, Indiana as neighbors to William and Almira Rannels, and Milton and Nancy Ann Reynolds. Edward is identified as a “Plasterer”. After living more than two decades in Jefferson County, Edward and Levinna reportedly moved to Tipton, Tipton County, Indiana, in either 1889 or about 1892. Edward Holmes's obituary stated that he was born 1 March 1828 in Garrett County, Kentucky; his father moved to Madison, Indiana, when he was age 5. Edward married “Miss Lavina Reynolds, of Pressburg,” 18 January 1848, remaining in Madison until moving to Missouri in 1858. After 1861 he was “in the cavalry service and attached to the home guards of northeast Missouri.” He returned to Madison after the war and moved to Tipton about 1892. He was a Methodist from age 12, IOOF member in Madison about 1866, and GAR member. Eight children survived him but only seven were named: Mrs. W. G. Cross and Mrs. Charles Grishaw of Tipton, Albert H. Holmes of Kempton, Edward and W. S. Holmes of Kalamazoo, Albert Holmes of Grand Rapids, and George W. Holmes of Newark, Ohio. Ten children total, with one daughter dying in infancy and a son at age 6. In an interview before her death, Levinna Holmes declared that she was born in Ohio, and was the daughter of William Jr. and "Alva" (Brockway) Reynolds, both from Ohio. Levinna stated that she had 3 brothers who preceded her in death - this matches Milton, Orin, and the unnamed brother identified in the 1840 Census for Otter Creek, Ripley, Indiana. Levinna passed away at the age of 86 years, 6 months, and 12 days on 14 Dec 1917. The following was extracted from the Madison Daily Herald, 24 Dec 1885: At 8 o'clock last night, Mr. George Holmes, son of Mr. Edward Holmes, of West Third Street, and Miss Mame Hurlbut, the youngest and pretty daughter of Mr. R. J. Hurlbut, the popular West End grocer, were united in marriage. The ceremony was performed at Trinity M.E. Church, in the presence of a large number of friends of the young couple, by the Rev. M. L. Wells, Miss Nellie Grayson playing a beautiful wedding march as the handsome young couple marched up the aisle to the altar. After the ceremony the happy bride and groom repaired to the residence of the bride's father, where they received the congratulations of a large number of friends, and partook of a wedding supper. For the present they will make their home with the bride's father. He died 26 Apr 1863 in Warsaw, Illinois, and is buried in the Oakland Cemetery, Warsaw, Hancock County, Illinois. The 1850 Census for North Madison, Jefferson, Indiana lists his family’s surname as “Rannels” with “Orin’s” age being identified as 7; then in the 1860 Census for Benton Township, Knox County, Missouri the surname is identified as “Reynolds” with Orin’s age listed as 17. Orin Reynolds fought in the Civil War for the Union, in Company E of the 118th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, commanded by Capt. Jarvis S. Allen. He joined on Aug 4th, 1862 and mustered into service on Nov 7th, 1862 at the age of 19, at Camp Butler, Illinois. On the mustering-in documentation he was listed as a farmer, is said to have been 5’8” tall, had light colored hair, a light complexion, and had blue eyes. Orin entered the war with the rank of Private, and was discharged with the rank of Private. Orin was discharged on a Surgeon’s Certificate of Disability on April 15th, 1863, due to disability (measles, dysentery, chronic diarrhea, and night sweats, with no chance of recovery) resulting from campaigns fought near Milliken’s Bend, LA (part of the Battle for Vicksburg). Orin died 11 days after his discharge on April 26th, 1863 in Warsaw, Hancock, Illinois. A Civil War Veteran’s Headstone was requested for his grave, reported to be in the Oakland Cemetery, Warsaw, Hancock County, Illinois. It should be noted that there is a conflicting report that identifies Orin as deserting his unit on Dec 9, 1862 near Cape Girardeau, Missouri. It’s believed that this report may be the result of a clerical error. The muster roll for the 118th Illinois Infantry lists Orin as being discharged due to the disability identified previously. Orin did not marry. His mother, Almaria at age 62 in 1867, filed for a Mother’s Pension for the service Orin gave to his Country during the Civil War. The pension application stated that William, his father, was “feeble-minded” (possibly what might be called “Dementia” or “Alzheimer’s” today) and that Orin was the sole source of income for both William and Almaria prior to and during his enlistment in the Illinois Infantry, sending money home when he could; onetime $20, another time $30, and another time $50. William’s doctor testified that William was both “mentally and physically incapacitated”. Other witnesses signing the Pension Application, identified that William and Almaria were dependent on Orin’s support for 6 years leading up to his service in the war for paying rent, buying clothes, and food. If you do the math, this means Orin must have grown up very fast since he was their sole source of income from about the age of 12!
